Reuniting Pets with Their Families:
- Check for ID: If the animal is friendly and has ID tags or you are able to scan for a microchip, contact the owner directly to arrange a safe return.
- Safety First: If you cannot safely approach or contain the animal, call Animal Control with detailed information about the animal’s location and behavior.
If the Animal Has No Identification:
- Visit the Shelter: Take the animal to the Pasquotank County Animal Shelter. Staff will document the find, scan for a microchip, and check lost pet reports.
- After Hours: If the shelter is closed, bring the animal to a safe location and contact the above number to file a found report.
- Provide Temporary Care: Ensure the animal has a safe, quiet space, fresh water, and food. Stressed animals may not eat right away, so please do not force them.
Helping from Home:
- Spread the Word: Post flyers in the area where the pet was found, as well as at local vet offices and community boards.
- Social Media: Share the pet’s information on social media and local "Lost and Found" community groups. Remember, it is illegal in the State of North Carolina to rehome an animal that is not yours that you have found.
- Follow Up: Check in with the shelter regularly and be sure to update or remove your posts once the pet is successfully reunited with its family.
